I’ve spent the past couple of weeks working on Chapter 5 of “Awakened” and it wasn’t because I had writer’s block. I knew exactly what I wanted to accomplish, but it was a matter of how do I get there? This chapter is pertinent to character and relationship development. In this chapter, Jeremiah and Bella have their first official date. It’s been a while since I’ve had a first date, so I kept asking myself a lot of questions. How nervous do I show Bella? Do I need to make Jeremiah nervous? Should I show him picking her up? Should that moment between them and her parents be there?
Needless to say, I think I changed chapter five about five or six times, but I finally finished the chapter last night. I got to the point where I decided to tackle the chapter in sections. I’d like to say I pulled some of my own experiences and placed them into this chapter, but I can’t say I have. Instead, I pulled from other moments.
First, Jeremiah has been raised right. So he asks permission to date Bella. I can’t say any guy has ever done this. Then again, I’d be shocked if one did. Second, I debated over what to show of Bella’s nerves. It’s her first date and I really felt it was important to display this commonality between almost all teenagers. It has been a while since I’ve been on a date, but I haven’t forgotten this feeling. Especially being a girl – clothes, hair, nails, and make-up. I even included the oh-so-helpful friend. Thanks Alex! Lastly, how much of the date do I include? It’s important to have them talking because as they learn about each other so do the readers. I think this came out better than I could’ve anticipated.
With all that said, I’ve decided to post this chapter soon. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share some of your first date experiences (good or bad) too. As the next chapter unfolds, so too will some of Jeremiah and Bella’s flaws.
