Upon the author’s recommendation, I read this short story/novella after the first novel in the series, “Escapement.” However, I don’t think it’s necessary. All three novels in the series are told from Semara’s point of view. “Weighted” on the other hand is told from Raeth’s. It gives an interesting tell into how the two girls meet and their first interactions with one another, while setting up the basis for “Escapement.” I very much liked seeing how Semara and Raeth’s friendship developed. The insight portrayed showed just how far a person will go for a stranger who becomes a friend. If you choose to read “Weighted,” I recommend it first. It’s available on Nook for free and works as a great opening to the series.
